is there a world, in which a wonderful day is waiting for me?" asks the advertisement rhetorically. of course, there are a lot of worlds in the first world which promise a lot, happiness included. one only should have been born at the right place and time. the full text in german:

today the official mourning for the victims of the flood in south asia took place in the member states of the european union. also here, in this spa close to the border with germany a three minutes mourning took place. via loudspeakers the guests were asked to remember; but how did people react? whereas some of them made the impression to be embarrased by this unusual demand, others obviously showed that they were not willing to undergo such "sentimental" procedures. but there were also very touching scenes. there was this mother sitting down, her face covered with her hands in silent sadness or even pain. her mentally disabled daughter embraced her to comfort her, repeatingly asking mother what bad things might have happened to her.

the austrian newspaper "kurier" titled one of its comments on the earthquake in south asia: globalisation of horror (globalisierung des schreckens). the journalist presented his thoughts about the long term consequences of the catastrophy. he hopes: "maybe economic globalisation is followed by the globalisation of humanity and worldwide aid." i strongly believe this is a very optimistic view.
erstaunliche töne, die hier in einem der österreichischen wirtschaft nahestehenden blatt zu vernehmen sind. ist dies etwa kapitalismuskritik? oder reflexion einer schnell vergessenen medialen befindlichkeit?
am nächsten tag, in einer versteckten ecke des sogenannten
silvesterpfades einige wenige schilder von nachbar(in!) in not, mit denen der arbeiter samariter bund und angehöriger anderer organisationen um spenden für die katastrophen geworben haben. wie immer soll die spendenfreudigkeit der wiener/innen gross gewesen sein, auch inmitten des diesjährigen innenstadtrummels. obwohl, ein wenig störend mögen die stummen zeug/innen des schreckens wohl manchem schon erschienen sein. sekt, das neue jahr, lustiges gekreische und elend allerorten, wie geht das wohl zusammen? in wien offenbar sehr gut!
