a tsunami destroyed lisbon and killed between 30.000 and 60.00 of its 300.000 inhabitants. catastrophies and evil is a widely discussed issue not only in the 18 th century (see voltaire´s famous poem), but also nowadays. even 9/11 can be easily combined with this issue. edward rothstein writes under the header of "defining evil in the wake of 9/11": it seems all too familiar: on a fall morning in a major city, civilization is disrupted. In less than a halfhour, buildings are destroyed, thousands are killed, the sky turns dark with dust. philosophers and religious leaders invoke the concept of evil. some blame the sinful behavior of the citizenry and cite divine retribution; others believe that civil society will soon restore itself.

wiener zeitung vom wochenende, nahm sich der gedanken an die bevorstehende reise via venedig nicht sonderlich beunruhigend aus. aber e. war, ganz pragmatisch und abenteuerlustig denkend, auf die nachricht von der überflutung venedigs sofort mit einem praktischen gedanken zur stelle: dass sauseschritt zu den utensilien seiner dienstreise eigentlich (endlich auch) gummistiefel besorgen könnte. [damals ...] wären ja auch welche benötigt worden und hätten erst ausgeborgt werden müssen. wir gewöhnen uns an die katastrophen, denkt sauseschritt nicht zum ersten mal, diesmal aber zugegeben ein wenig erheitert ....sophie calle is a french artist who works with photographs and performances, placing herself in situations almost as if she and the people she encounters were fictional. she also imposes elements of her own life onto public places creating a personal narrative where she is both author and character. she has been called a detective and a voyeur and her pieces involve serious investigations as well as natural curiousity reads sauseschritt.

ich bewunderte ihn seit jeher von ferne - seit meiner kindheit. an einem 8. november - ich war dreißig - erlaubte er mir, ihn zu besuchen. er wohnte hundert kilometer weg von paris. in meinem koffer hatte ich ein brautkleid aus weißer seide, mit einer kleinen schleppe. ich zog es an, für unsere gemeinsame nacht.

sauseschritt wishes to thank flaschenpost, a california based european weblog, for the post, which made him aware of the fact, that some of the citizens of our world are so much used to be identified by external tags and loose their right to exist, if they do NOT have these. well, sauseschritt strongly believes that albanians and their friends and relatives do know where they live. also other tagless citizens, who constitute the majority of people on our planet, do so. only tag - bearers seem to be puzzled that people without tags are able to exist. all of a sudden, with mr. krusheelnycky´s article, a whole country looses his right to live in europe ..........

i am saying that everybody has a certain level of "couldn't care lessessness". At that point we stop wanting things to be better, and want them to be simpler, lighter or smaller instead.
of course, she is talking about thoughts creeping into our minds, when we already bought something cool, which we cannot handle easily. Like drug addicts we do not think about what comes after, when we are short before the shot ....

weil vom verschwinden der alten welt (bitte: wo sind die verheißungsvollen konturen der neuen???) die rede ist, vielleicht noch ein hinweis. nicht ganz ohne hintergedanken veröffentlicht diesmal in der online taz von einer erfrischend ironischen juli zeh, der rising star des deutschen literaturbetriebs: wer will schon zeitungen lesen? heutzutage kann man über alles reden und hört dabei auch die orthografischen fehler nicht. zeitungen kosten, wie der name schon sagt, eine menge zeit, die wir nicht haben. Inaff ist inaff, wie der engländer sagt.
es lohnt, weiter nachzulesen. wer frau zeh noch nicht kennen sollte, dem sei ihr neues buch ans herz gelegt. wer sauseschritts notizen deshalb schätzt, weil der sgn. balkan immer wieder thema sein will, dem sei ergänzend gesagt: die autorin hat auch ein buch über ihre
erfahrungen im bosnien des jahres 2001 veröffentlicht.
